Temporal variability in the Pacific oyster spatfall along the French Coast: a new monitoring project ArchiMer
Pouvreau, Stephane; Maurer, Daniele; Auby, Isabelle; Soletchnik, Patrick; Mille, Dominique; Bernard, Ismael; Bedier, Edouard.
In France, spatfall of Pacific Oysters occurs traditionally in two shellfish area of the south west of France: the Marennes-Oléron bay and the Arcachon basin. The spat collected in both sites ensures approx. 70 % of the need of the French oysters production (the other part is produced in hatcheries). But, since ten years, recruitment have become highly variable especially in Arcachon basin. For instance, in this site, spatfall (assessed at the end of the reproductive season) can vary between 50 oysters per collector to more than 20 000 oysters per collector (Figure 1). This huge variation arise questions from oysters producers and the French National Committee for Shellfish Culture want to get some explanations of the phenomenon. It is well known that...

Modelling Crassostrea gigas growth and reproduction in different contrasted ecosystems by using dynamic energy budgets : generic validation of the oyster-DEB model ArchiMer
Bourles, Yves; Maurer, Daniele; Le Moine, Olivier; Geairon, Philippe; Mazurie, Joseph; Gangnery, Aline; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Pouvreau, Stephane; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Oyster farming is the main aquaculture activity in France, where Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) is spatially cultured from the English Channel to the Mediterranean coasts. Oyster growth performance monitored along French coasts are widely heterogeneous among culture sites and over years. Many studies have been carried out to understand the effects of environmental factors on oyster growth and physiology, by using bioenergetics growth models. However, most of these studies were site-specific. As an example, the model developed by Barillé et al. (1997), which was extensively specified with more than 50 parameters, was validated in the Marennes-Oléron Bay, but cannot be successfully applied to other culture sites without re-estimating parameters or...

A single bio-energetics growth and reproduction model for the oyster Crassostrea gigas in six Atlantic ecosystems ArchiMer
Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Bourles, Yves; Maurer, Daniele; Robert, Stephane; Mazurie, Joseph; Gangnery, Aline; Goulletquer, Philippe; Pouvreau, Stephane.
Many studies based on bioenergetics growth models have investigated the effects of environmental factors on oyster (Crassostrea gigas) growth and physiology. However, most of these models are site-specific and cannot be applied to other culture sites without the re-estimation of parameters or re-formulation of some processes. We aimed to develop a generic growth model suitable for application in contrasting environments, with a constant set of parameters. We tested the oyster-DEB model (Bourlès et al. 2009) for the stimulation of C. gigas growth in different cohorts (spats and adults) at major shellfish culture sites in France, in several years: Arcachon (1993–1994); Marennes-Oléron (2007); Quiberon (1999, 2000, 2001); Rade de Brest (2008); Baie du...

Assessment and interpretation of temporal or spactial differences in shellfish productivity of typical French ecosystems ArchiMer
Mazurie, Joseph; Soletchnik, Patrick; Ropert, Michel; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Auby, Isabelle; Maurer, Daniele; Bacher, Cedric.
Monitoring of Crassostrea gigas performances, from two year-classes, during 12 years, in various French shellfish farming areas have revealed great inter-annual and inter-sites differences in reproduction, growth, mortality or quality of oysters (meat content, Polydora infestation...). The presentation attempts to highlight how a comparative analysis of existing temporal or spatial data on molluscs, water quality, geography or meteorogoly may help to better understand and manage shellfish ecosystems. The range of hydrobiological conditions (food availability, turbidity, temperature...) recorded at national, pluriannual scale, in relation to shellfish performances, enlarges the base of such relationship. However, undirect causative factors, either natural...

Management of oyster and mussel culture ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Drinkwaard, A.; Bohle, B.; Figueras, Antonio; Lavoie, R.; Maurer, Daniele.
The world aquaculture production (fresh and marine waters) achieved 11.1 million tonnes in 1986 (FAO, 1989). The molluscs represented 21 % of the total production. Marine aquaculture with 5.45 million tonnes reached 49% of the total production. The marine cultivated mollusc production was 2.25 million tonnes due mainly to oysters (36%), mussels (34%), clams (16%), and scallops (6%). As the aquaculture production is clearly identified in the statistics only since 1984, the evolution of the production of oysters and mussels for the last 15 years has been analyzed with the FAO data for the total catch (fisheries and culture). By comparison of the two statistics for the same year (1986), the fisheries represented only 17% for oysters and 16% for mussels. Fig....

Each summer, the IFREMER laboratory of Arcachon monitors, in the scope of an agreement with the regional conchological section of Arcachon (SRC), the reproduction of flat oysters in the Arcachon Bay. This monitoring aims to provide oyster farmers with information necessary to the spat collecting: - dates and amount of spawn, - larval development speed, - presence of the most evolved stages in the habitat (close to fixation). Reproduction is monitored from mid-June to mid-September, with plankton being sampled four times a week on different representative sites. Oyster larvae at different stages are counted. At the end of the reproduction period (September-October), larval recruitment on collectors is estimated via the counting of the spats collected on...

Hydrodynamic characterization of the Arcachon Bay, using model-derived descriptors ArchiMer
Plus, Martin; Dumas, Franck; Stanisiere, Jean-yves; Maurer, Daniele.
A numerical model (MARS-2D) was developed, with the aim of describing the hydrodynamics that prevail in Arcachon Bay. Direct model results as well as derived mixing and transport time-scales (tidal prism, local and integrated flushing times, age of water masses), were used to understand the behaviour of water masses and exchanges between the Bay and its frontiers. Particular attention was paid to the processes that drive the hydrodynamics (tides, wind and rivers), in order to understand their respective influence. The Arcachon Bay hydrodynamic system appears primarily to be highly influenced by tides; secondarily, by winds. About two third of the lagoon total volume is flushed in and out at each tidal cycle, which represent a mean tidal prism of 384...

Maurer, Daniele.
The survey was carried out during the first two weeks of August on 52 oyster farmers, representing 8% of professional oyster farmers. Each oyster farm was represented with respect to its importance. The survey unit was the "pond" defined according to qualitative and quantitative criteria. Approximately 270 ponds were identified in 220 farms. This number was sufficiently high to explain observed patterns. The results reported here could not be very precise due to the way the data were collected. For example, the dates of first occurrence of mortality events may correspond to dates when mortality was first observed rather than when it actually started.

Phytoplankton versus macrophyte contribution to primary production and biogeochemical cycles of a coastal mesotidal system. A modelling approach ArchiMer
Plus, Martin; Auby, Isabelle; Maurer, Daniele; Trut, Gilles; Del Amo, Y.; Dumas, Franck; Thouvenin, Benedicte.
This study presents an assessment of the contributions of various primary producers to the global annual production and N/P cycles of a coastal system, namely the Arcachon Bay, by means of a numerical model. This 3D model fully couples hydrodynamic with ecological processes and simulates nitrogen, silicon and phosphorus cycles as well as phytoplankton, macroalgae and seagrasses. Total annual production rates for the different components were calculated for different years (2005, 2007 and 2009) during a time period of drastic reduction in seagrass beds since 2005. The total demand of nitrogen and phosphorus was also calculated and discussed with regards to the riverine inputs. Moreover, this study presents the first estimation of particulate organic carbon...

Since the introduction of the oyster Crassostrea gigas in the Arcachon Basin, the sale of oysters has been banned for the first time in 2005, based on mouse bioassay positive for lipophilic toxins. If the beginning of this episode could be related to the presence in water of microalgae of the genus Dinophysis and okadaic acid in the hepatopancreas of oyster, it has not been the same for the end of the period, which was qualified as of "atypical toxicity episode" or "toxicity of unknown origin", that is to say, "an episode of shellfish contamination, revealed in a toxic response in mice by intraperitoneal injection , whose origin can not be explained by the presence of known toxins usually sought”. Between 1993 and 2009, 7 episodes Dinophysis or okadaic...
